Stapling

Stapling a piece of fabric to a backing is a suitable method for cross-stitch and needleworks that are going to be framed with a window mount.

This is not a conservation method unless the staples are rust-proof and an extra piece of fabric has been sewn on to the artwork so the staples do not touch the work.

The materials required for stapling are:
• rag board
• plier stapler
• rust-proof staples
• pencil
• ruler or T square

Staple the fabric as follows:
1. Stitch an extra piece of fabric to each edge of the needlework.

2. Trim the rag board to a size larger than the needlework by 50 - 90mm on each side.

3. Draw a parallel line, to the edge of the board, 10mm inside where the edge of the needlework finishes.

4. Repeat step 3. for each side.

5. Place the needlework on the board so it is over the lines drawn.

6. Line up one corner of the needlework by looking at the pencil line through the weave.

7. Staple the through the excess fabric at the corner.

8. Pull the needlework along one of the lines stapling as you go.

9. Keep working around the needlework in the same direction, stapling it in alignment.

10. When you have completed the entire perimeter of the fabric it is ready for framing.
